Ernest W. Beutel grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago, the son of a Chicago Police Officer and a mother who stayed at home to raise him and his sister. He attended Loyola University where he received his B.S. in 1967 and his M.D. in 1971. From 1972 through 1976 he was a resident in general surgery at Loyola Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago. From 1976 through 1978 he did a cardiovascular-thoracic surgery residency at Cook County Hospital. He was a medical officer in the U.S. Navy where he achieved the rank of Lt. Commander.
In 1985, Dr. Beutel obtained his law degree from Loyola University. He was admitted to the bar in Illinois in 1986. He has lectured extensively on issues of health care law. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice.
Dr. Beutel is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an Emeritus member of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Chicago Surgical Society. He is also a member of the Chicago Surgical Society, the American Pain Society, the Society of Laproendoscopic Surgeons, the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery and the American College of Legal Medicine. In addition, Dr. Beutel is a Past President of the Medical Staff and was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Resurrection Hospital located in Chicago, Illinois. He has held the title of Diplomat for both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Beutel had also accepted a teaching appointment in surgery as an Associate Clinical Professor at Loyola Medical School and holds a certificate in Hospital Risk Management from the University of Health Sciences and Chicago Medical School.
In 2001, Dr. Beutel left the practice of medicine to work full-time as a civil litigator concentrating his practice in the area of medical negligence, representing individuals and families impacted by negligent medical care and other negligence and neglect. During his time as a civil litigator, Ernest Beutel has worked to help achieve several millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements in medical malpractice and other personal injury cases.
